At Frame Today, we love transforming cherished items into stunning framed pieces that capture their essence and beauty. Recently, a customer brought in a mesmerising mandala artwork and requested a custom framing solution that would highlight the intricate details while maintaining a refined and elegant presentation. The project presented a unique challenge, because the customer wanted to focus entirely on the mandala, excluding any surrounding elements.
Here's how we approached this special framing task and achieved a result that exceeded expectations.
The Mandala Challenge
Mandala art is known for its intricate patterns and symmetrical designs, often imbued with deep cultural and spiritual significance. Our customer wanted to ensure the mandala was the focal point of the display, with no distractions from the surrounding black background. To achieve this, we decided against a traditional rectangular matboard window and instead opted for a circular opening. This choice allowed us to frame the mandala in a way that accentuated its perfect symmetry and highlighted the detailed craftsmanship.
Precision Mat Cutting
One of the key aspects of this project was the millimetre perfect mat cutting so we used the capabilities and precision of our computerised Valiana matboard cutter. We cut the circular matboard opening just a few millimetres away from the outer gold edge of the mandala. This careful measurement ensured that the gold detailing was fully visible, creating a striking contrast with the surrounding black mat. To further enhance this effect, we used a black mat with a black core, which provided a virtually invisible bevel cut. This technique made the mat appear seamless, drawing the viewer's eye directly to the mandala's vibrant colours and patterns.
The Perfect Frame Selection
Our customer had a clear vision for the frame: it needed to complement the gold accents in the mandala without being overly flashy so it was important to chose the right frame colour. She wanted gold in the frame which needed to closely match the gold script so she selected a beautiful black and gold frame that met her vision. The frame's subtle elegance and close alignment with the colour palette of the artwork added a touch of sophistication without overpowering the mandala's intricate details.

The final framed piece is a testament to the power of thoughtful and collaborative design achieved through our consultation process with our customer. By carefully selecting materials and paying attention to every detail, we were able to create a framed piece that perfectly showcases this mandala. Our customer was thrilled with the result, appreciating how the frame and mat enhanced the artwork while keeping the focus on the mandala itself.
