Stretched Fabric Float Frames

Transforming Tablecloths into Timeless Art

At Frame Today, we believe every cherished memory deserves a frame that showcases its story. Recently, our Castle Hill store had the pleasure of working on a unique project transforming vibrant holiday tablecloths into stunning pieces of art. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how we brought these mementos to life.

From Tablecloth to Timeless Framed Masterpiece

Our client brought in two beautiful tablecloths filled with sentimental value, each evoking treasured holiday memories. While fabric can be challenging to frame due to its delicate and flexible nature, our team was up for the task. Using our teams expertise and attention to detail, we ensured the final result was both visually stunning and well-protected.

Preparing the fabric

Thin fabrics like tablecloths can sometimes reveal shadows from stretcher bars, compromising the visual appeal. To address this, we mounted an archival matboard onto the stretcher bar before stretching the fabric. This concealed the thinness of the material, eliminated any visible brace shadows and preserved the fabric’s vibrant colours. Archival materials are critical for long-term preservation, as they prevent discoloration and damage over time.

Stretching with precision

Stretching fabric is an art form in itself. It requires even tension across the surface to avoid creases or warping. To lose and creases will be visible, to tight and the stretched fabric can warp or worse still, tear!

We carefully stretched the tablecloths over the matboard-mounted stretcher bars, ensuring a smooth, flawless finish that allowed the intricate patterns and colours to shine.

The perfect Australian oak float frame

To complete the transformation, we chose our elegant Australian Oak float frames. This style is a favourite for canvases and fabrics due to its minimalist and modern appeal. Float framing features a 5mm gap between the artwork and the frame, creating the illusion that the stretched tablecloth is floating within its border. This effect enhances the artwork’s presence while maintaining a timeless and sophisticated look.

Why Float Frames Are Perfect for Fabrics

Floating frames are particularly well-suited for projects like this because they:

  • Showcase the artwork: The gap around the edges draws attention to the piece, making it a true focal point.
  • Add depth: The floating effect creates a sense of dimension, elevating the overall presentation.
  • Protect the fabric: By keeping the fabric raised and protected by the frame, float frames help prevent compression or damage.

The final result

The finished pieces were nothing short of spectacular. The vibrant tablecloths, once functional items, were transformed into works of art that now serve as beautiful reminders of cherished holidays. The Australian Oak float frames provided the perfect finishing touch, blending warmth and elegance.

The client was thrilled with the outcome, and so were we! Projects like these remind us of the power of custom framing to preserve and celebrate life’s most meaningful moments.

Why Choose Professional Framing for Fabrics?

Framing fabric requires expertise, the right materials and an eye for detail.

Here are 3 reasons why professional framing is essential for preserving textiles:

  1. Preservation - archival materials protect against discoloration, moisture and other environmental factors.
  2. Longevity - proper stretching and framing techniques ensure the fabric maintains its shape and integrity.
  3. Aesthetic appeal - professional framing enhances the beauty of the fabric, turning it into a polished piece of art.
